First Aid Myths Busted: What You Need to Know

Debunking Common First Aid Myths

There’s plenty of first-aid advice out there, but not all of it is accurate or safe. Let’s set the record straight by debunking some common first aid myths.

🚫 Myth #1: Tilt Your Head Back for a Nosebleed

✅ The Truth: Leaning back can cause blood to flow into your throat and stomach, increasing the risk of choking or vomiting. Instead, lean forward slightly and pinch your nose just below the bridge for 10 minutes to stop the bleeding.

❄️ Myth #2: Apply Ice Directly to Sprains

✅ The Truth: Placing ice directly on the skin can cause frostbite. Instead, wrap the ice in a towel and apply it in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling safely.

🔥 Myth #3: Apply Ice to Burns

✅ The Truth: Ice can damage burned skin by restricting blood flow. Instead, remove any jewelry around the burn and run cool (not cold) water over the area for 10 minutes to ease pain and prevent further damage.

🐙 Myth #4: Pee on Jellyfish Stings

✅ The Truth: Urinating on a jellyfish sting can trigger more venom release, making the pain worse. Instead, rinse the sting with vinegar for 30 seconds, then soak the area in hot water for pain relief.

🥶 Myth #5: Apply Hot Water to Frozen Skin

✅ The Truth: Exposing frostbitten skin to hot water can cause burns. Instead, warm the area gradually using body heat or lukewarm water to prevent further damage.

🔥 Myth #6: Apply Heat to a Sprain

✅ The Truth: Heat can worsen swelling. Instead, follow the RICE method:
✔ Rest the injured area
✔ Immobilize with a bandage
✔ Cold therapy (use ice wrapped in a towel)
✔ Elevate the injury above heart level

☠️ Myth #7: Induce Vomiting After Poisoning

✅ The Truth: Vomiting can worsen poisoning and burn the esophagus. Instead, immediately call Poison Control before taking any action.
