Why Staying Current on your First Aid and CPR Skills is Important
First Aid Myths vs. Facts: How Guidelines Have Changed
As medical research advances, first aid guidelines are updated every five years to reflect the latest scientific findings. Many old practices once considered lifesaving have now been replaced with safer, more effective techniques. Let’s take a look at some common first-aid myths and the updated best practices you should follow.
First Aid for Poisons
❌ Myth: You must immediately induce vomiting if someone ingests an unknown poison.
✅ Truth: Do not induce vomiting, especially for acidic or alkaline substances like bleach. Vomiting can cause serious burns and injuries to the esophagus, throat, and mouth. Instead, seek medical help and contact Ontario Poison Control immediately.
First Aid for Nosebleeds
❌ Myth: Tilt the person’s head back during a nosebleed.
✅ Truth: Tilting the head back can cause blood to flow down the throat, leading to choking or stomach irritation. Instead, have the person lean forward slightly and pinch their nostrils together for 5-10 minutes.

First Aid for Seizures
❌ Myth: Put a wooden spoon or object in the person’s mouth to stop them from biting their tongue.
✅ Truth: This is extremely dangerous and can cause choking or dental injuries. Instead, focus on:
-
Keeping the person safe by clearing the area of sharp objects.
-
Placing them on their side to help with breathing.
-
Timing the seizure and calling for emergency help if it lasts longer than 5 minutes.

CPR: ABC vs. CAB
❌ Myth: Before starting chest compressions, you must give two rescue breaths. (ABC: Airway, Breathing, Circulation)
✅ Truth: The recommended order is now CAB: Compressions, Airway, Breathing. Begin with 30 chest compressions, followed by 2 breaths. Immediate high-quality chest compressions improve survival rates.
